The London Stock Exchange plans to launch UK tokenized public equities structures through a strategic partnership with Payward, exploring how regulated market infrastructure can integrate with on-chain distribution networks. The framework is designed to preserve shareholder rights, legal protections and corporate governance standards while broadening investor access. Settlement and asset servicing would be powered by LSEG’s Digital Securities Depository, subject to pending regulatory approvals.
The partnership forms part of LSEG’s broader digital transformation roadmap and would connect with LSE 24 , a 24-hour trading venue, and its digital securities settlement infrastructure. LSEG’s Digital Settlement House, or DiSH, is designed to enable instantaneous, programmatic settlement across on-chain and off-chain payment networks. Using commercial bank deposits held on the DiSH ledger, the platform provides a cash leg for multi-currency foreign exchange and digital asset transactions.
The LSE intends to list and start trading xStocks on LSE 24 beginning in 2027, subject to regulatory clearance. xStocks are 1:1-backed tokenized representations of publicly traded shares that track their underlying equity securities. They are intended to provide distributed-ledger speed, programmability and continuous access across centralized exchanges, self-custodied Web3 wallets and authorized on-chain applications.
The collaboration reflects an effort to bring public capital markets and blockchain networks onto shared institutional rails, creating a model for cross-border asset mobility. Payward co-CEO Arjun Sethi said the partnership demonstrates how investors could access public markets in new ways through on-chain infrastructure. LSE CEO Julia Hoggett said tokenization must preserve the trust, rights and role of regulated markets.
