Bank NXT Hands Its ATM and Debit Card Processing to Network International

The Bank NXT story reached Finextra on Monday as an external press release, which means the text belongs to the two companies and no Finextra editor checked or changed it before it went up. I read it as a statement of intent. Bank NXT is an Egyptian retail and corporate bank. It is extending its work with Network International. The core fits in one line: Bank NXT will move its ATM and debit card portfolio onto Network's end-to-end processing platform.

Bank NXT moves its cards to Network International, announced 11 October

Arab Finance and Economy Today carried the same text on 11 October, a day before Finextra, and Arab Finance says it came from an emailed press release. I found no interview with either company, and Maghreb Insider says plainly that "the announcement describes an infrastructure commitment; it does not report completed operational changes". The quotes match everywhere I looked. I count that as one source published many times.

What the ATM and debit card migration covers

Card processing is the back-end work behind a swipe or a cash withdrawal: authorising the transaction, routing it to the card scheme, settling the money and keeping the records the bank and its auditors need. I think of it as the engine room. The bank keeps the customer and the brand.

The release promises "more streamlined operations" and tighter security. Chief executive Tamer Seif El-Din called the deal "a cornerstone of Bank NXT's strategy to modernize our payments infrastructure and better serve our customers", and said it would let the bank bring in new services faster. I liked one line from Maghreb Insider more. "Those are projected benefits, not results the bank has demonstrated."

Egypt's 22 million instant payment users

Maghreb Insider also gives the market context the release lacks. By the end of the second quarter of 2026, about 22 million customers had registered on Egypt's Instant Payment Network. They had made roughly 1.47 billion transactions worth about 4.33 trillion Egyptian pounds, according to figures presented by central bank governor Hassan Abdalla. Cards still matter alongside that. The domestic Meeza scheme had issued more than 43.5 million cards by June 2025, the site says, citing Ahram Online.

The site warns the two sets differ. I would not add them together. What they do show, read side by side, is a country where a bank's debit card and ATM estate still carries real volume even as instant transfers take a large share of everyday payments. I think that explains the timing of this deal.

Network International's 20 years in Egypt

Network has been busy in Egypt this year. In March it said it had switched on card tokenisation for Apple smartphones at four Egyptian banks, in the third wave of tokenisation licences granted by the Central Bank of Egypt. Network says it has been there "for over 20 years". It announced a 1 billion Egyptian pound investment there in 2023. It says the Egypt hub serves more than 160 banks across Africa and more than 65 in the Middle East.

In May, Network announced a processing deal with First Abu Dhabi Bank Misr covering card issuing and acquiring. Bank NXT now joins that list. Dr Reda Helal, Network's group managing director for processing in Africa and growth markets, said the new deal reflects its aim of "expanding our geographic footprint and supporting the digital evolution of banks across the MEA region". I read Egypt as a priority market for Network.

What I could not find about the Bank NXT deal

I found no contract value. I found no length either. There is no date for the migration to finish. I do not know how many cards Bank NXT runs. Maghreb Insider adds that the bank plans to expand its ATM network to key locations, with no target number or rollout date attached to that plan. I could not find its previous processor. My guess is that part of its portfolio already ran on Network, since the release talks about extending a collaboration. That is a guess. I want a migration date before calling it done.
